On Our Radar: Queen Sugar's All Female Directorial Team

The Academy Award-nominated directher Ava Duvernay is taking her talents from the silver screen into your living room with the new series Queen Sugar. Duvernay has teamed up with OWN to create the 13-episode series. It is based on the novel Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile and tells the story of Nova Bordelon, a journalist and activist from Saint Josephine, New Orleans who's life changes when she is tasked with running the family's sugarcane farm after her father's death.

Whats most notable about the series is that it will feature an all female directorial team. Duvernay says that the show employs a lot of women from the Black independent film space. Talk about girl power! The series stars True Blood actress Rutina Wesley and features appearances from Don Cheadle and Glyn Turnman. A release date has yet to be announced but it's definitely on our radar. Set your DVRs!
